NEWS All six newly elected MEPs attended a meeting with Prime Minister Dr Joseph Muscat yesterday at Castille. Dr Muscat expressed his pleasure at meeting all six MEPs and expressed his hope that common ground will be found when it comes to Europe. He called on the newly-elected MEPs to work together in the best interest of the country while they are in Brussels. He urged them all to keep their political differences aside and work together for the good of the country.
Dr Muscat welcomed the fact that four out of the six elected MEPs were women saying this was a sign that things were changing. Speaking from experience as a former MEP, he urged them to find ways of working together because the Maltese public appreciated this.
MEP Alfred Sant, who is leading the Labour group that includes Marlene Mizzi and Miriam Dalli, said he will work with the government and the Labour MEPs were ready to collaborate.
On his part, MEP David Casa, speaking on behalf of the Nationalist MEPs, who include Roberta Metsola and Therese Comodini Cachia, also pledged collaboration. He said that the group would work for the good of the country and of the EU and would remain loyal to the country and to the Prime Minister, although this would not mean that the PN’s MEPs will always agree with the government. they would also be ready to stand up for Malta if it felt the need to.
The new MEPs later met Opposition leader Dr Simon Busuttil, who also started his political career as an MEP. Dr Busuttil told the MEPs they were in for “an unforgettable life experience”. They would notice how different politics were done in the EU, where there was less confrontation and he hoped they would bring this style of politics to Malta.
In the European Parliament they would not be Nationalists versus Labourites but they would be working together especially now with the possibility of a grand coalition between the EPP and Socialists because of the increase in far right representatives, he said.
